Yoga has become more popular over recent years, and one reason could be that it doesn’t require any special equipment. Besides comfortable clothing, the only item that you will be bringing along to your workouts is one of the many eco yoga mats that are on the market today. While there is an abundance of choices available in yoga mats, and many are within a more than reasonable price range, it can still be difficult to pick the perfect mat for you. Choosing the right mat is much more important than choosing other pieces of exercise equipment. Why? Because you could potentially be using that mat for years to come, so you want to choose one that’s going to last.
Choosing Between Yoga Mats
There are many different types of eco friendly yoga mats, in a variety of materials and colors. The one common element that you want to have with your mat is a stickiness factor that allows you to plant your poses safely on the terra firma. The yoga mats stick to the floor once they have been dampened with water or sweat. From there, you can select a mat that will work best for the type of yoga that you plan to do. You can either ask your yoga instructor which the best mat is, or you can do some research online. After doing your homework, it’s time to try out a some yoga mats and figure out which one feels right for you. And although it may seem shallow to select a mat based on color, keep in mind that you will be spending a lot of time looking down at that surface, trying to focus your energy. Your yoga experience will be much more enjoyable if you have a mat you find appealing.
Caring for your Mat
It’s important to break in yoga mats before you start using them, and then clean them periodically once you are. Your yoga mat may come with instructions. If the mat did come with instructions, be sure to follow them exactly. You should avoid putting your mat in a top-load washing machine, because the spin cycle could damage the mat. Putting your mat in the dryer can damage its sticky surface, so this should also be avoided. It is best to air dry your mat, away from direct sunlight if possible. If you absolutely must use the dryer to dry your mat, use the lowest heat setting and don’t leave it in there longer than ten minutes.
Quality yoga mats can last for years when they are cared for properly. Choose a material and color that you like, and you will get plenty of good use out of your yoga mat.

In these days when everything is dominated by time and everything needs to be done yesterday it is hardly surprising that peoples’ stress levels have risen. Yoga is gaining many new members to its practice as it offers many suggestions for the relief of stress and also offers an activity that needs almost no space and can very easily be practised at home. Yoga is known as a philosophy that includes both mind and body and is used for many reasons including, for example, the relief of pain relief of stress and for meditation and relaxation.
When a group of men was asked what they knew about yoga the answer was that a person sat on the floor, twisted their different body parts into painful positions, closed their eyes and made funny noises. This is a general idea of the responses given and shows how there is a lack of understanding of the yoga philosophy.
Today people are turning to yoga increasingly more to relieve their stress, to relax in the comfort of their own home and to think a little bit more clearly about themselves. All that is actually required to practice yoga is a yoga mat and these come in a huge variety of sizes, materials and colors. They cost can vary from about $20 to as much as you are prepared to pay. Many people would say that perhaps a normal rug or even just the carpet in your lounge can be suitable for yoga but yoga mats sell in their thousands and are very much an integral part of the yoga ritual.
Yoga mats can be purchased for a number of reasons with comfort being a very powerful consideration though color plays an important part for the ladies, ensuring they match their surroundings. The yoga mat you choose will suit your particular needs since it’s all a matter of different textures and different thicknesses that will help you to feel better.

What is referred to as a premium yoga mat usually means an extra thick mat (although not always) or a mat that offers extra support and traction so that you won’t slip. Premium yoga mats boast durability and such features as a ‘unique waffle texture’ to enhance grip. A premium yoga mat may also refer to an eco-friendly and organic choice of yoga mat. Most yoga mat lines will have a ‘premium’ yoga mat range.
When it comes to yoga mats, the resounding conclusion one could make is that you really need to try a few different types of mats to find the one that will be perfect for you. Although, premium yoga mats are a popular choice, you can’t ignore the fact that some people find no satisfaction with them and are happier with a ‘standard’ 1/8-inch sticky mat or perhaps an organic cotton yoga mat.
Practicing yoga on a super soft and comfortable mat appeals to many people. Premium or thick yoga mats mean more padding and extra cushioning usually without being too squishy or unstable.
Most of the time the standard yoga mat size is 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) and what most people call the ‘thick yoga mat’ is double this at 1/4-inch (6.4 mm). But just to confuse us, some manufacturers refer to their 1/4-inch (6.4 mm) yoga mats as ‘standard’. It probably makes more sense to refer to the 1/8-inch (3.2 mm) mats as ’standard’ because nothing else that could be used as a yoga mat would be this thin. When you’re ready to buy your thick yoga mat, be sure to check the sizing chart to see that it is actually the thickness that you want. There are other yoga mat sizes other than these, usually the thickest is 1/2-inch (12.8 mm) which is extremely thick and soft.
A premium yoga mat is a luxurious choice but have an open-heart and be prepared to trial and error a few mats before you find ‘the one’. Remember you can always, sell or giveaway the yoga mats you did not love and there are actually quite a few creative ways you can recycle or re-use yoga mats so you don’t feel so guilty about treating yourself to a premium yoga mat that enhances your yoga.
