Joy Cutler Designs - Jewelry

Much like her art, Joy Cutler’s life has been a series of transformations. She began as a ceramics major at California College of the Arts until she unsuspectingly registered for a theatre class and soon began to pursue a career as an actor and playwright. After successfully producing several plays and co-founding the Out to Lunch Theatre Company in
Berlin, Joy returned to the United States and tried her hand at jewelry design. There was an instant connection between Joy and the malleable metals that she was able to shape into jewelry. Now, after four years of studying under the reputable Fred de Vos, Joy has become a unique success in jewelry making, receiving the Best in Craft and Best
in Jewelry awards at the Washington Square Fine Arts Show in New York City. Her one-of-a-kind pieces can be found in stores ranging from Eileen Fisher in New York’s East Village to the Vessel Gallery in Berkeley, California.
Joy’s work is not jewelry, but rather it is artwork that you can wear. Influenced by an earlier interest in wall ceramics, Joy has been able to create jewelry that is equally dependent on negative space as it is positive space. She creates shapes that are geological in their essence, reminiscent of the floor at the bottom of the ocean or a
moment in the flow of lava from a volcano. Joy strives to create work that represents nature’s asymmetry, revealing beauty in life’s imperfections.
Joy also has her own line of pet jewelry, which began out of an inspiration to create an artistic tag for her own dog, Burke. When her neighbors saw what she had produced, word spread, and Joy has been making jewelry for pets ever since. She has donated pieces to auctions for Greyhound Rescue as well as to another charity to help raise money for the
military dogs in Iraq and Afghanistan. Joy continues to have her hand in as many art forms as possible, acting, writing plays, and creating jewelry for both people and animals, but you never know what type of transformation may come next.
