SUNSCREEN OR SUNBLOCK? IS THERE A DIFFERENCE?

A lot of people interchange the use of the terms sunscreen and sunblock whenever they talk about skin careproducts. Both actually do the same thing—they protect your skin from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. It is how they do it that sets them apart.

Sunscreen

As the name suggests, these products “screen” out ultraviolet rays. You get ultraviolet rays from the sun. They cause sun damage which lead to leathery looking skin, uneven skin tone, dryness or oiliness and wrinkles. Ultraviolet rays also speed up skin aging. To protect you from these, sunscreens contain ingredients like paramethoxycinnamate and Triethanolamine salicylate that absorb ultraviolet rays. As soon as the UV rays hit the sunscreen barrier, these chemicals disintegrate their harmful elements before they reach your skin. There are organic skin products that contain sunscreen properties, and these are better choices because they contain less irritants and preservatives.

These products are usually in liquid form and are oily to the touch. Most sunscreens that can be sprayed on or are labeled “invisible” or “light” usually contain those two ingredients. On the plus side, those with darker skin no longer have to deal with the cakey, white residue of sunblocks, but they also have to use powder to get rid of the oiliness. Sunscreens also need to be re-applied every two hours or so because the chemicals lose their ability to break down UV rays over time. Sunscreen is one of the most effective skin treatments for dull skin.

Sunblocks

Sunblocks literally block UV rays from your skin because they coat your skin with particles that act like a mask over your face. These skin care products contain zinc or titanium dioxide, which is a white, chalky substance. If you ever experienced putting on too much sunblock and ended up rubbing off some white, gluey stuff off your face, that is excess titanium or zinc dioxide. They last longer than sunscreens and do not need to be reapplied unless you got it washed off, like during a swim or because of excessive sweating. However, the white residue is a problem for darker skinned people. If you have darker skin but must use sunblock, try to get tinted ones and get the color that will match your skin tone best.

Protecting yourself from the sun is very important. Excessive exposure to UV rays is linked to skin cancer. It also makes your skin look old and tired. Organic skin products with sunscreens or sunblocks are great choices for those who have sensitive skin. By protecting yourself from the sun, you can enjoy the beach, a summer picnic or any outdoor activity without worrying about skin damage.
